Subscribing to a Blog and Romance, an Analogy

ihaveloveforyou_1.gifWhat do Blogging and Romance have to do with each other? Well, after writing a post about my five requirements that need to be satisfied before I subscribe to a blog, it suddenly got me thinking that there is a eerie connection!

The initial attraction I feel to a blog is the site design. If the site looks beautiful and well laid out, I might invest some more of my time to explore the site. If its ugly and the colors clash, I will immediately leave the site without a second thought. Similarly, the initial attraction I feel to a girl is based on her physical appearance. If she’s not attractive, I rarely give her a second thought. I don’t want to sound shallow, but it is what it is. People in general are drawn to beautiful things, whether it is a blog design or a member of the opposite sex (or same sex).

No matter how perfect you think something is, there is always a flaw. Sometimes, it is a flaw that can be overlooked or mitigated. Other times, that flaw is the deal breaker. For blogs, this fatal flaw is Advertisements. Of course, some blogs do a better job than others on minimizing these flaws. Its okay to have Ads on your blog, just as long as they don’t dominate your blog. Similarly, that potential hottie that you have your eyes set on might have an overbearing father, smelly feet, or excessive baggage. Who knows. But as long as you can deal with the father and get her some foot powder, these little things can be pardoned. The excessive baggage could potentially be troublesome though. Sometimes, you gotta take the good with the bad. But sometimes these fatal flaws are just too much to handle!

Next on the list is inner beauty. In the blogging world, we call this content. Sadly, if your blog doesn’t have the outer beauty, inner beauty is a moot point. But even if you have a sizzling site, without any content to back it up, you have pretty much a zero chance of getting your visitor to subscribe. It’s basically the same way in romance. I’m sure there a lot of us out there that have experienced this. You meet a super attractive girl, and later you find out she’s really boring or an uninteresting. Looks will get their attention, but personality will retain them. Same goes for blogging. Web design will make a good first impression, but content is what keeps them coming back.

Finding a good blog is just like finding a good girlfriend. You have to consider the total package of looks, personality, and baggage. The only difference is that when you subscribe to a good blog, you have 100% chance of success. When you ask that girl on a date, your chances might not be so good.

Wow, that was a very good post and a very good comparison between a blog and a romance partner. I agree about the advertisements, they have become a big turnoff. I have tried to minimize it on my blog and have even devoted a separate page for the ads. So if anyone wants to see ads they can click on that page and see just the ads. My way of minimizing excessive ads on a blog.

Thanx again for the great post and once again that was a great comparison

wow great connection. agree with you on “it is what it is” sometimes, however, there are those who look neither ugly or pretty, yet have a personality that grows on you. btw i love your pictures in every post, do you draw them yourself?
